CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 14, 2011) - Through sun, rain and wind, more than 11,000 riders brought passion and perseverance to their efforts toward a cancer-free future, raising a total of $43.9 million to support cancer research and delivering a striking blow in the fight against a disease that impacts one in four Canadians.
The 2011 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer events came to a conclusion this past weekend with the fourth and final ride taking place in Quebec July 9-10. Following on the success of the Ontario, B.C. and Alberta rides that took place in June, the Quebec event was another triumph, raising more than $6.7 million for cancer research in that province.
"Congratulations to all the riders, volunteers and participants who committed so much to cancer research. Together we really have made an epic impact," said Patrick D. Daniel, Enbridge President and CEO. "We're proud to be the national sponsor title for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer for 2011 - 2013 and we hope to see you out there participating in next year's rides!"
In addition to their company's sponsorship role, Enbridge employees were active participants in the Ride, with more than 200 employees, friends and family members raising more than $900,000.
"Knowing others who have had cancer, and as a cancer survivor myself, this was a very personal event for me. I'm proud of my accomplishment, and with my fellow employees, proud of our company's association with the Ride. We're eager to do what we can to contribute to its success in raising much-needed dollars for research," said Janet Holder, President, Enbridge Gas Distribution and a member of Enbridge's Ontario Ride team.
In terms of dollars raised, the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is the largest cycling fundraiser in Canadian history. To date the event has raised more than $130 million for cancer research treatment and care at the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the BC Cancer Foundation, the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation in Ontario and the Jewish General Hospital Segal Cancer Centre in Quebec.
The 2012 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer takes place in Ontario (June 9-10), B.C. (June 16-17), Alberta (June 23 - 24) and Quebec (July 7 - 8). The event is for cyclists of all abilities; all you need is a bike and a helmet! Sign-up today at conquercancer.ca.
