Enbridge Marks Expanding Presence in Athabasca Region
FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA--November 26, 2002 - Enbridge Inc. today hosted a gathering in Fort McMurray of industry, local community and First Nations representatives to mark the company's growing presence in the Athabasca region, including the completions of the new Petro-Canada MacKay River and the EnCana Christina Lake pipeline laterals. The company also announced recent and future business plans related to oil sands development and a new community investment initiative. The transfer of operations of the Athabasca Pipeline from Suncor to Enbridge on October 15, 2002, and the completion of new laterals for movement of PetroCanada and EnCana bitumen, are the most recent examples of Enbridge's growth plans for its liquids pipelines business in the oil sands region. "Since we began construction of the Athabasca Pipeline in 1998, Enbridge has maintained a steady focus on this region as a key centre of economic development with many opportunities for business growth. With our recently established operating presence here at Fort McMurray, we are looking forward to investing in this community, which is now home to a growing number of our employees, customers and stakeholders," said Richard Bird, Group Vice-President, Transportation North, Enbridge. In assuming control of operations of the pipeline, Enbridge added about 15 employees at its Athabasca Terminal. Also today, Enbridge announced a $150,000 donation in support of the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. This community investment will be directed to the purchase of video endoscopy equipment for ambulatory care. "The Northern Lights Regional Health Foundation is extremely pleased for the generosity and leadership that Enbridge Pipelines has shown today to contribute towards top quality health services in our region," said John Vanderbeek, Chair, Northern Lights Regional Health Foundation. "We look forward to entering into this partnership with Enbridge. Their donation is something this community should be very proud of." Mr. Vanderbeek said the donation will help ensure that state of the art endoscopic equipment is available in the Foundation's Ambulatory Care department, resulting in reduced patient waiting lists, improved patient comfort, and less patients needing to travel to Edmonton for specialized Endoscopic procedures. Enbridge joined the growing oil sands business community in 1999, with the completion of the 545-km (339-mile) Athabasca Pipeline from its Athabasca Terminal, just north of Fort McMurray, to its main line hub at Hardisty, Alta. Initially dedicated to movement of Suncor's oil sands production, the Athabasca Pipeline has a capacity of 570,000 barrels per day and now also serves other producers, such as PetroCanada and EnCana. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to build, own and operate a diesel-fuel loading facility at its Athabasca Terminal to supply the regional market for Suncor. As well, Enbridge is currently conducting an Oil Sands Markets Study to determine potential transportation needs to meet growing production forecasts in the oil sands, believing new pipelines and expansions will likely be required to ensure efficient movement of products to market. "Enbridge looks forward to strengthening its partnerships with producers and the community as a whole as the company becomes a growing contributor to economic development in this region," Bird said.
