Enbridge to build Diesel Facility at Athabasca Terminal
CALGARY, ALBERTA--Enbridge today announced it will build, own and operate a diesel fuel loading facility at its Athabasca Terminal. The new facility will be designed to load up to 5,000 barrels per day of diesel fuel to supply the market for Suncor Energy Marketing Inc. in the Fort McMurray region. The facility, expected to be in service by the spring of 2003, will consist of an automated loading system, additive tankage, associated piping and two truck-loading islands. "This initiative, a key development opportunity for Suncor, is thelatest step in our continued drive toward enhanced customer service," said J. Richard Bird, Enbridge Group Vice President, Transportation North. "The new facility is also an indication of our ability to meet new market opportunities that are arising as oil sands production continues to grow. With our Athabasca Terminal and pipeline system, Enbridge is well positioned to capture that growth." The Athabasca Terminal, with 1.6 million barrels of crude oil tankage and facilities, is linked by Enbridge's 545-km Athabasca Pipeline to the company's Hardisty Terminal in Central Alberta. The Athabasca Pipeline has a potential capacity to transport 570,000 barrels per day for delivery to Canadian and U.S. markets."This new diesel facility allows Suncor to continue to meet our customer needs and also expand our diesel market in the region so our doors are open for more business," said Richard Brown, Suncor Energy Marketing's Vice-President of Crude Oil and Natural Gas Marketing. Enbridge's Athabasca Terminal is located just south of the Suncor plant near Fort McMurray. It currently handles Suncor's oil sands production, as well as bitumen delivered from Petro-Canada's MacKay River plant via a lateral pipeline connection recently completed by Enbridge.
