Enbridge Gas New Brunswick: More Saint John Residents and Businesses Now Able to Benefit From Natural Gas

SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK--Enbridge Gas New Brunswick has recently

completed distribution pipelines that will make the benefits of

natural gas available to more homes and businesses in Saint John.

Homeowners and businesses in the Rothesay Avenue area,

Millidgeville and Saint John West now have the option to switch to

the low-cost, environmentally friendly fuel. Access to natural

gas has been available for more than a month in East Saint John,

in the Grandview Industrial Park.

"Switching to natural gas is one of the best investments a

business or homeowner can make," says Mark Butler, Marketing

Manager, Enbridge Gas New Brunswick. "It is a safe, convenient,

clean and low-cost fuel. In fact, natural gas provides

significant reductions in operating costs, helping business owners

improve their bottom line."

The Saint John Regional Hospital recently switched, making it the

first hospital in Atlantic Canada to operate on natural gas.

Natural gas is powering the hospital's steam plant, which

distributes heat and hot water throughout the building. The

Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation, which manages the hospital,

expects to save more than $400,000 in heating costs annually, and

to reduce emissions by 50 per cent per year.

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel. It creates much

lower levels of carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide per unit of

energy than oil, coal or electricity generated in New Brunswick.

Carbon dioxide is a key factor in global warming and sulphur

dioxide is the source of acid rain.

Bruce Sutherland Associates Limited of New Brunswick converted the

hospital's equipment from fuel oil to natural gas. The company

has been doing business in the province since the 1950s, when they

converted coal to oil heating equipment.

"The move to natural gas was a natural progression for us.

Business has been brisk since industrial and commercial customers

started making the switch to natural gas," says Bruce Sutherland's

Neil Gordon. "This new choice of fuel is great for all of New

Brunswick. Not only does it boosts businesses like ours, but it

also creates huge savings for industry and reduces emissions."
