Enbridge issued a challenge to other companies and organizations
that operate fleet vehicles to reduce fuel consumption by 20 per
cent. The Fleet Challenge will run from September to December
2001. During that time participants will be encouraged to adopt
measures to reduce fleet fuel consumption.
Reducing vehicle emissions is a key priority in improving
persistent air quality problems in urban areas, as well as
contributing towards a climate change solution. Reduced fuel use
will also help organizations save money. Pick-up and delivery
vehicles spend 20-40 per cent of their time idling. Reducing
idling time reduces the amount of fuel used, resulting in ongoing
savings.
"Corporations, government, associations and individuals need to
work together to change behaviours that impact the quality of our
air," said Steve Letwin, Group Vice President, Distribution &
Services, Enbridge Inc. "By accepting the Fleet Challenge
organizations are demonstrating their support of the Smog Summit's
goal of working towards cleaner air."
Organizations can register for the Fleet Challenge at
www.repairourair.org from June 25 until July 31,2001. The
official launch and information session for participating
organizations will be held on August 13. Baseline emissions
measurements must be complete by September 28 with final
measurements and reports on baseline improvements completed by
December 31, 2001. The winner of the Fleet Challenge will be
announced in Toronto in April 2002. Details and guidelines are
available at www.repairourair.org.
