of contributing to the communities in which it operates, Enbridge
Inc. announced today that it has signed on as a Founding Corporate
Supporter for the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid.
The investment in the Toronto Olympic Bid was announced at the
University of Toronto Aquatics Centre by Rudy G. Riedl, President
of Enbridge Consumers Gas, and Stephen J.J. Letwin, Enbridge's
President & Chief Operating Officer, Energy Services.
"Enbridge has been an active supporter of Toronto since 1848,"
said Mr. Riedl. "As a cornerstone corporate citizen, Enbridge
believes that the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid is good for Toronto and
is in harmony with our commitment to help build a healthy and
vibrant city that strengthens long-term economic and social
infrastructure."
Although preliminary, the Toronto bid document indicates that a
successful bid would be highly beneficial to the city, the
province and the rest of Canada. The data so far suggest that
40,000 "person-years" of employment would be created in the
construction industry alone.
"Enbridge has long been associated with causes that improve
quality of life," said Mr. Letwin. This commitment to the
community is the foundation of our decision to support this bid.
Enbridge is showing great leadership in making this contribution
and we hope other corporate citizens will join Enbridge in
supporting the bid team."
Also attending the event were Mayor Mel Lastman, Provincial
Olympic Commissioner Morley Kells and David Crombie, Chairman of
the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid.
"The Olympic Spirit is growing," said Mr. Crombie. "We continue
to receive great support from all Torontonians. Enbridge is a
valued member of the bid team."
In addition to supporting the Toronto Olympic Bid, Enbridge is
proud of its involvement with other community initiatives
including the United Way, Share the Warmth, the Canadian Opera
Company, Peel Children's Safety Village, Second Harvest, the YMCA
Healthy Returns Campaign, the Hospital for Sick Children the
Canada Association for Community Living, the CNIB Crocus Campaign
and Junior Achievement.
As well as its donation, Enbridge will offer its Community Events
equipment and expertise to Toronto 2008. The group provides
in-kind donations including barbecue services, a wheelchair
accessible hot air balloon, a 700 square foot inflatable tent and
two Olympic torches. Last year Community Event Services
participated in more than 850 events and contributed over $1
million in in-kind donations.
